One frequency, two jobs
The confusion is natural: MIFARE and NTAG cards look identical, share ISO/IEC 14443 A at 13.56 MHz, and both come from NXP. The practical question is who reads the card. If the answer is "a phone", you want NTAG — every modern smartphone opens an NTAG NDEF record natively. If the answer is "a wall reader, gate or terminal", you want the MIFARE family, which access and transit platforms are built around.

Choose NTAG when
End users tap with their own phones: NFC business cards, smart packaging, product authentication, review cards, smart posters. Encode a URL or vCard, lock it if needed, and it works on iPhone and Android with no app.
Choose MIFARE when
The card is a credential for a system you control: door access, elevators, transit gates, cashless payment, campus ID. Pick Classic only for legacy compatibility and closed loops; pick DESFire EV2/EV3 for anything new that touches money, identity or restricted areas.

Can a smartphone read a MIFARE card?
Not as a normal tap. Phones expect NDEF data (the NTAG format); a MIFARE Classic or DESFire credential does not present that by default, and reading it requires special apps and permissions. For phone interaction, specify NTAG.
Can NTAG be used for door access?
Some simple systems accept the NTAG UID as an identifier, but the MIFARE family is designed for access control and supported by every major platform — so NTAG for phone-facing uses, MIFARE for credentials.
