In short: EM4200 is a read-only 125 kHz chip with a factory-fixed ID — the cheapest, simplest LF credential. T5577 is rewritable and can be programmed to EM- and HID-compatible formats, which is why card-issuing systems and hotel platforms specify it.

Fixed ID or programmable — that is the whole question

Both chips live in the same LF 125 kHz world of access fobs, hotel keycards and legacy readers, where range is a few centimetres and no phone can read the card. EM4200 ships with a unique serial number burned in at the factory: the reader learns the number, and that is the system. T5577 ships blank and programmable: the issuing system writes the format and ID it wants — commonly EM4102-compatible or HID-compatible layouts — and can rewrite the card later.

Choose EM4200 when

The system only needs a stable unique number: gym and membership fobs, simple door access, time-and-attendance. It is the lowest-cost option and there is nothing to configure — enroll the ID and go.

Choose T5577 when

The platform writes to the card. Many hotel-lock systems issue keys by programming the card at the front desk, and replacement cards for mixed EM/HID estates are easier when one blank chip can be programmed to either format. A security note on 125 kHz

Neither chip encrypts anything — LF credentials present an ID and cheap cloning devices can copy them. That is acceptable for low-stakes doors and memberships, but anything protecting money, data or sensitive areas belongs on 13.56 MHz DESFire. We will say so plainly if your use case has outgrown LF.
